Quoddy Nature Notes – Fox Sparrow

Foxes, except for Fox news, are usually shy and not comfortable around people, but being bashful is really apparent in the Fox sparrow.  There are, however, a couple of ways he really shows off, and one is his scientific name.  The Fox sparrow is still confusing the ornithologists who can’t decide if the critter has […]

Song Sparrow – Talmadge (Map 45)

This song sparrow perches on a branch in our brush pile and sings all day. I can walk 10′ from him while working. RF

Cardinal – Talmadge (Map 45)

I’ve seen cardinals here only three times since moving here in 1999. I heard it singing while coming in from chores but it didn’t click. A lot of birds are singing now and I was looking around for Ava. I was reaching for my coffee cup to fill before sitting down to write when a […]

Quoddy Nature Notes – Juncos

It hasn’t been a very exciting winter in regards to our bird feeder activity.  The heavy spruce cone crop seemed to supply all of the nutritional needs of our fine feathered friends, and our black oil sunflower seed bill so far this season has been pretty small.  Towards the end of February we got a […]

Orchard Oriole – Pembroke (Map 37)

An immature male Orchard oriole was around the house for awhile.  Didn’t eat any seeds or orange pieces, but did eat suet and slurped at the hummingbird feeders and foraged on the ground.  I’ve never seen one around here before, and he seems to have left.  FG

Quoddy Nature Notes

by Fred Gralenski Many years ago when I was a young student I was supposed to read that “April is the cruelest month” by some famous writer or something.  I don’t remember that it had to do about nature, so I guess I didn’t pay much attention.  Now that I’m an old geezer, I think […]

Leucistic Robin – Pembroke (Map 37)
