the curriculum together with the environment.

A World of Habitats – Nature Studies at Hirundo
Explore three habitats at the preserve; learn to id flowers and trees; collect data; and
compare findings
Who should attend? PreK to 8 teachers, educators – parent, non-formal & after school – and
College students
When: Saturday, May 18, from 9:00 to 2:30
Where: Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, Alton, Maine. To learn about Hirundo visit:
Why attend? Receive the nationally recognized Project Learning Tree PreK-8 Activity Guide that
includes 96 classroom ready activities. Learn how to explore and compare various habitats with
a naturalist, an experienced teacher and the Maine PLT Coordinator. This outdoor and hands-on
field investigations session provides opportunities for learning how to use the outdoors as a
means to teach all content areas with links to current state and national standards. Time to
reflect on how this experience meets your instructional needs.
Cost of the workshop is $35/educators & $25/students. All participants will receive the guide, a
certificate of attendance and hand outs related to all activities. Coffee and morning snacks
provided. Bring a lunch and dress for the outdoors for the better part of the day.

Maine Project Learning Tree Educator Workshop at Coastal
Maine Botanical Gardens
May 21, 2013 or October 25, 2013
Learn how to bring your curriculum outdoors during a day-long investigative workshop spent
exploring and studying the forest, shoreline and garden ecosystems at Coastal Maine Botanical
Learn How To:
· Implement outdoor PLT activities from the award winning Project Learning Tree PreK-8 Guide
(activities are standards based with links to Common Core Standards and Next Gen Science
· Set up field-based study plots and collect data in three different habitats
· Establish a Picture Post (picturepost.unh.edu) to observe and measure environmental change
at any site
Workshop facilitators include:

Early Childhood workshop with Maine Project Learning (PLT)
June 1, 2013 7:30 a.m. (sign in time) to noon
Cathance Child Care at FHC, 1201 Main Street, Bowdoin, ME (the old Bowdoin Central School)
Explore and discover the joys found in nature through movement, art, literature, math, snacks &
outdoor play too!
Who should attend? Child care providers; Head Start teachers; Montessori teachers; pre school
and kindergarten teachers
Why attend? All eleven award winning activities address Exploring Nature with Five Senses,
Trees Through the Seasons, and Meeting a Neighborhood Tree. Activities provide family
connections and ways to use technology with EC learners. PLT is aligned with Head Start and

Cost: $35/person includes morning refreshments, the PLT Environmental Experiences for Early
Childhood guide and an accompanying CD with 14 songs.

Woods, Waters and Wildlife
A model for teaching about Maine’s forests, water and wildlife.
Maine’s State Coordinators of Project Learning Tree, Project WET and Project WILD have been awarded an EPA grant to develop a teaching model focused on Maine’s natural resources. Woods, Waters, and Wildlife is a selection of activities from these award-winning resources, offering teachers experiential, field based, interdisciplinary tools for effective lessons.  Pairs of teachers from ten different schools will be selected to pilot the delivery of the model in their classrooms.
Each teacher team will receive:
· Instruction and practice in a 1-day workshop including a minimum of 5 PLT, WET and WILD
activities each.
· Information and coaching from experienced professional leaders in Maine’s natural resources
· An outline of activity connections to Common Core standards and the Next Generation Science
· Supplies, posters, books, publications and tools packaged in self-contained totes for easy school
storage. Materials included have a value in excess of $800!
· A $100 stipend.
· Optional 1.5 CEUs. All teachers receive a 15 hour certificate of participation.
Each teacher will commit to:
· Full participation in the initial 1-day professional development workshop to be held on
Wednesday, June 26 from 9 to 4 at the Leed-built Lake Auburn Water Treatment facility.
· Delivery of activities to their class(es) between September and November of 2013.
· Full participation in a 3-hour after school wrap up/share session, exact date TBA by participants.
· Provide feedback about the program by completing of a pre and post teacher survey.
· Preparation of a pre and post student assessment (with assistance from a Maine Curriculum
